LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's tennis team won a heartstopper in its first home match of the spring season.

On Friday in the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex, the Knights won the final two singles matches to vault past UIC for a 4-3 victory.

With UIC (0-2) holding a 3-2 lead, Bellarmine sophomore Eli Wood evened things up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gustavo Schwebel at No. 5 singles. It then all came down to Knights junior Xavier Ecarma, who stared down the pressure and produced a tense, match-clinching 7-6, 7-5 victory over Mihailo Savic at No. 6.

It was a resilient effort by Bellarmine (1-1), which entered singles play down 1-0 after the Flames secured the doubles point, although junior Jack Batchelor and sophomore Matthew Nice did win handily at No. 1 with a 6-1 triumph.

Batchelor, at No. 1, and sophomore Vineet Ramesh, at No. 3, were both victorious in three sets to supply Bellarmine's initial two points. Batchelor dropped the first set but regrouped for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Randy Wilson. Ramesh grinded out a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Robinson LeMeur.

Bellarmine will play at 3 p.m. (ET) Friday at Furman.
