LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Bash Wieland matched a career high with 20 points and
Langdon Hatton dropped in 18 as Bellarmine secured their first conference win of the season Saturday afternoon at Freedom Hall, 69-63 over Jacksonville.
Bellarmine (5-17, 1-6 ASUN) rumbled out to a 36-19 lead at the intermission behind 10 first-half points each from Wieland and Hatton. The second half was a different story, however, as Jacksonville (10-11, 1-6) rattled off a 21-4 run over an eight-minute span early in the second half to get back in the game.
The Dolphins took their first lead of the game at 56-55 with 4:27 left on a free throw by Stephon Payne III. It would be short-lived, however, as a pair of free throws by
Garrett Tipton 10 seconds later gave the lead back to the Knights.
Bellarmine would make the necessary plays from there and get a little help from a pair of Dolphins turnovers in the final minute to secure the win and snap a 10-game losing streak, their longest since the 1994-95 season.
Saturday's game marked the eighth straight game in double-figures for Wieland. The fifth-year guard went 8-for-11 from the field, all two-point attempts. He is averaging 18.3 points in three games since returning from a broken left pinkie and has shown what production the Knights had been missing for a month and a half while he was shelved.
Hatton's 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting followed a career-high 20 on Thursday. It was the junior forward's sixth straight game in double figures and 13
th overall to lead the team. His highlights included a clutch three, on his only attempt from deep, to put the Knights up four with 2:59 left. He also capped the afternoon with an emphatic breakaway dunk in the final seconds to serve as an exclamation point and the release of all of the Knights' frustrations.
Tipton finished with 11 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Dezmond McKinney returned to action after missing seven games with a shoulder injury. The junior guard did not attempt a field goal, but dished out an assist and made a key steal with 19 seconds left to seal the win for the Knights.
For the Dolphins, Robert McCray V scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting and Gyasi Powell added 10 points and six rebounds. Jacksonville has now lost three straight in ASUN action.
Bellarmine returns to action on Thursday as they head south to Georgia to face Kennesaw State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
