JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The most disruptive force Saturday in Swisher Gymnasium for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team was foul trouble.
Plagued early with foul issues that affected them throughout the game, the Knights never got untracked in falling 87-69 to Jacksonville in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Junior guard
Hayley Harrison nailed five 3-pointers en route to 26 points for Bellarmine (6-13, 1-6 ASUN), but the Knights' leading scorer was among the victims of an incessant whistle, as were fellow starting backcourt members
Hope Sivori and
Miyah Brown.
As a result, Bellarmine never got in a flow, and Jacksonville (6-13, 2-4) seemingly delivered one of its top performances of the season. The Dolphins led 22-16 after the first quarter and 41-25 at halftime. The Knights never got closer than 13 in the second half.
Senior guard
Claire Knies sank a trio of 3-pointers in scoring 15 points for Bellarmine while Sivori tallied 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard
Jayla Butler posted a career-high six steals and added 10 points. The Knights' 17 steals were their most this season against a Division-I opponent and they scored 38 points off turnovers.
Jacksonville's Edyn Battle scored a game-high 31 points, including a 12-for-15 effort from the free-throw line. The Dolphins shot 48.1 percent from the field and also had 35 attempts from the charity stripe, hitting 26. There were 51 fouls called in the game.
Bellarmine will host FGCU at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.
