Suder scores 20, but men’s basketball drops ASUN opener to Austin Peay

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Peter Suder recorded his second 20-point game of the season, but the Bellarmine men's basketball team dropped their Atlantic Sun opener to Austin Peay Thursday night at Freedom Hall, 84-68.

Suder matched a season high with eight field goals, now done three times. He also pulled down a season-high nine rebounds and dished out three assists. His strong performance followed up an 18-point, six-assist effort in the nonconference finale at High Point.

Ben Johnson scored 12 points as a follow-up to his career-high 32 on Saturday. Garrett Tipton was the Knights' other double-digit scorer with 15.

Bellarmine (4-12, 0-1) outshot Austin Peay (8-8, 1-0) 44.8% to 41.5%, but APSU was able to pour in 12 threes to the BU's eight. The Governors also outscored the Knights at the charity stripe 18-8 and outrebounded them 41-33.

Dezi Jones paced APSU with 21 points, though he hit on only 6-of-19 field goal attempts. Three of the Governors' four other starters also reached double figures: Ja'Monta Black (14), Demarcus Sharp (13) and Isaac Haney (13).

The Knights will get another shot at the Governors in the regular season finale in Clarksville, Tenn., on March 1.

Bellarmine continues ASUN play Saturday at Freedom Hall against Lipscomb. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
