NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lipscomb pulled away from the Bellarmine University women's basketball team over the last five minutes of the fourth quarter Saturday in securing a 76-65 win over the Knights in Atlantic Sun Conference action in Allen Arena.
Bellarmine (5-9, 0-2 ASUN) dropped its first two conference games, but the Knights were vying for the victory in the final period against Lipscomb (9-6, 2-0) just as they previously did at Austin Peay on Thursday.
Bellarmine regrouped after facing a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and tied it up in the fourth with 6:30 remaining on a nice look from junior guard
Hayley Harrison to senior forward
Cam Browning. It was knotted again at 61 with 5:22 left, but Lipscomb followed with a game-clinching 12-2 run over the next four minutes to turn back the Knights.
Bellarmine had three turnovers during the span, and each time the Bisons produced points after the Knights giveaways. BU also went cold from the floor, as four free throws from Harrison were their only points over the final 5:22. Both teams had shooting struggles in the first half, but Lipscomb managed a 50-percent clip after the break while BU never quite found its touch.
In only her second game back after being out for a month with injury, Browning nearly recorded a double-double after registering a game-high 10 rebounds and eight points. Harrison went 8-for-10 from the line in scoring a team-high 15 points with seven rebounds and five assists, sophomore guard
Miyah Brown notched 14 points and six rebounds, junior guard
Hope Sivori supplied 11 points and six rebounds, senior guard
Claire Knies collected nine points and five rebounds, and senior forward
Lucy Robertson grabbed eight rebounds.
Lipscomb had five players score in double figures, led by 19 off the bench from Claira McGowan. Blythe Pearson amassed 16 points and both she and McGowan knocked down three 3-pointers apiece.
The teams were tied at 15 after one quarter and knotted at 33 at halftime. Lipscomb opened the third on an 18-4 run, but Bellarmine answered with a 9-1 burst that got the Knights within 54-48 heading into the fourth.
Bellarmine will welcome Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday in its ASUN home opener.
