Volleyball falls to Queens in Charlotte on Sunday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Bellarmine University volleyball played hard but was unable to take down Queens on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 at the Levine Center.

With the loss, Bellarmine moves to 6-12 on the season, 3-5 in ASUN action. The win improves Queens to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in league play.

The Knights played to the end of each set with a chance to win all three but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 25-20, 25-22, 28-26 respectively. In the first set, Bellarmine found itself down from the beginning, but clawed back from down as many as eight points after a 4-0 run made it 23-20. Queens would go on to claim the next two points to win the set 25-20. The second set was back-and-forth from the beginning. Tied at 10-10, the Royals went on a 3-0 run to go up 13-10, a lead they would hold for the rest of the stanza. Bellarmine got back within two multiple times late in the set, including 24-22 but were unable to complete the rally, falling 25-22. The Knights led early in third set, jumping ahead 4-2. Queens followed with two separate three-point runs to take the lead 8-5 before the Knights rallied to tie the set 8-8. From there, the teams traded points back-and-forth with neither team able to gain an advantage. Nothing was decided at the 25-point mark as the set played on until Queens ultimately scored the final point to take a 28-26 win.

Sophomore Natalie Bland led the Knights with 16 kills, adding eight digs and two blocks. Fifth-year senior Addison Foote, returning after missing the last three matches, was the only other Knight to record double-digit kills with 10 on the day. Grad Student Mara Perry led the Bellarmine defensive effort with 19 digs, marking her fifth straight match with 12+ digs and 15th match in double-digits this season. Junior Tessa Nauert also turned in double-digit digs for Bellarmine, tallying 12. Fellow junior Kylie Van Hoy paced the offense with another 40-assist performance, registering 42 in the match with eight digs, a kill and a block.

Up next, Bellarmine will return home to Knights Hall for a short, two-game ASUN homestand as the Knights host North Florida on Friday, October 25 and Jacksonville on Saturday, October 26.
