LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University sprint football team had a solid tune-up on Saturday ahead of their Midwest Sprint Football League semifinal matchup next weekend. The Knights handled Oakland City 32-14 and now prepare to face the loser of Saturday night's game between Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Calumet College of St. Joseph.
Receivers
Tyler Smith and
Shannon Tonge each hauled in a pair of scores as quarterback
Kyle Horvath matched his program record of four passing scores, established two weeks ago against SMWC. Tonge finished with 67 yards on three catches while Smith made five grabs for 64 yards.
Nathan Kitchens did not find the end zone, but made four receptions for 64 yards.
Horvath finished with 221 yards on 16-for-29 passing.
Running back
Brenden Reid added 75 yards on the ground, his second-highest total of the season. Reserve quarterback
Max Gibbs also punched in his first career touchdown on the ground from two yards out, the Knights' lone rushing score of the afternoon.
Bellarmine (4-2) outgained Oakland City (1-5) 359 yards to 210 and won the turnover battle 2-1 as they bounced back from a defeat against SMWC their last time out.
Bellarmine honored four senior players before the game for Senior Day: kickers
Tristan Houk,
Orlando Roblero and
Ben Valle; and defensive back
Lance Weiter. Weiter is the program's all-time leader with eight interceptions, including four this year to lead the league entering play Saturday.
The opponent and game time for next week's MSFL semifinals are to be announced.
