Knights post another critical victory after knocking off FGCU 2-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After rising from the ashes, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team has taken flight.

Freshman midfielder Nick Harshaw and sophomore midfielder Calle Sjoberg were a goal-producing tandem that, coupled with a gritty effort on defense, lifted Bellarmine to a 2-0 win over FGCU in Atlantic Sun Conference play Tuesday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine (5-6-3, 2-3-1 ASUN) had kept its hopes alive for an ASUN Tournament berth with its 2-1 victory Saturday over Jacksonville and followed with a soaring performance in the triumph over FGCU (4-8-2, 3-2-2) in its home finale.

With one game remaining, Bellarmine vaulted from eighth to a tie for fourth in the ASUN. Six teams qualify for the conference tournament. North Florida, Stetson and FGCU have locked up bids.

Harshaw scored for the second game in a row. He converted off a Sjoberg steal and look in the 15th minute for his fourth goal of the season. It was Sjoberg's third assist of the year.

Harshaw returned the favor in the second half. After tracking down a long lead pass, Harshaw, from near the end line, passed to a hard-approaching Sjoberg near the top of the box. His one-touch was slotted inside the right post for a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute.

Bellarmine's defense did a lot of heavy lifting protecting the lead. In the first half, when Bellarmine had a 1-0 advantage, senior goalkeeper Peter Van Euwen stonewalled a penalty kick opportunity by FGCU's Alon Drey. He had another diving save in the second half and finished with three.

Stationed on the right post, junior midfielder Jackson Marks headed away an FGCU shot off a corner kick for a defensive save late in the contest. Senior forward Chris Shust got a thunderous reaction from his teammates when he threw his body at an Eagles' service and sent it flying backward beyond the Knights' bench.

Bellarmine grinded out its fifth shutout of the season. FGCU finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots, but the Knights had a 5-4 edge on frame. BU's defense was exceptional as well against 10 Eagles corner kicks.

Bellarmine concludes the regular season with a 7 p.m. (ET) ASUN contest Saturday at Stetson.
