Field hockey ends season with Senior Day loss to Ball State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine field hockey team fell 2-1 to Ball State Friday evening at Trager Stadium in the final game for seniors Bente Moormann, Isabel Gladys, manager Leila Thompson and fifth-year senior Anna Crump.

Crump ends the season leading the team with six goals and four assists (16 points). She also finishes her career as the Knights' all-time leader in games played and starts with 80. Moormann and Gladys played in all 69 games during their tenures. Gladys started all 69 while Moormann started 57, including the last 50.

In her final campaign, Moormann recorded four goals, second on the team, and three assists, tied for second on the team with Luna Tuncay. Her 11 points were second on the team to Crump.

Crump tallied 21 goals and 18 assists (60 points) as a Knight. Moormann's career ends with six goals and 22 assists (22 points) while Gladys scored four times and assisted teammates three times (11 points).

Emma Van Hal got Ball State (5-12, 5-3 MAC) on the board first just under six minutes into the game, but Bellarmine (4-13, 1-7 MAC) equalized with just over three minutes left in the first half.

Annie Malloy inserted a penalty corner and then moved to the left side of the cage while Gladys fielded the insert and handed it off to Moormann. Moormann moved to the right side of the goal and took a shot that ricocheted off the right post and into Malloy's possession. The freshman snuck it past the Cardinals' keeper for her second score of the season.

Emma Hilton scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 9:40 left in the third quarter off a penalty corner.

Despite winning both the penalty corner battle 8-4 and the shots tally 12-8, Bellarmine was just able to convert the one score.

A win for Ball State would have automatically clinched their spot in next week's MAC Championship. However, their spot was secured early when Longwood lost 2-0 to James Madison.
