HUNTINGTON, W.V. -- Bellarmine Knights men's basketball played even in the first half, but were unable to keep up in the second half, falling 83-62 on the road to the Marshall Thundering Herd. With the loss, the Knights drop to 0-4 on the season.
It was a slow start for the Knights as Marshall took an early 8-0 lead.Â
Jack Karasinski got Bellarmine's offense going with six straight points and
Myles Watkins hit a layup to cut the Thundering Herd's lead to 11-8. After the two teams exchanged free throws,
Curt Hopf made a layup and
Dezmond McKinney drove to the basket and converted an and-one opportunity to give the Knights a 15-13 lead. It was a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the first half as neither team could extend their lead beyond three points.Â
Tyler Doyle made a floater in the lane off of a
Ben Johnson miss to give Bellarmine a two-point lead with 45 seconds remaining in the period, but after two more Thundering Herd free throws, Bellarmine could not beat the shot clock on its final possession, leaving the score tied at 34 going into halftime.
Bellarmine got off to another slow start to begin the second half, as Marshall scored the first 11 points of the period.Â
Dylan Branson and Johnson hit two threes to get the second half scoring started for the Knights, but the Thundering Herd responded with threes of their own on both occasions. Johnson hit a jumper in the paint to cut it to single digits, but an 8-2 Marshall run made it 59-44. The Knights struggled to find consistent offense as Marshall kept them at arms' length for the remainder of the second half. Bellarmine attempted one final push as Karasinski converted an and-one opportunity to cut the lead to 67-58 with 6:29 remaining, but the Knights would not get any closer and Marshall iced the game with a 16-4 run to close things out.
Karasinski led the Knights on offense with 20 points for his second 20+ point effort in four games as a Knight. 13 of his points came from the free throw line, where he went 13-of-14, setting new career highs in both attempts and makes. Â
Billy Smith and Watkins contributed with 10 points apiece. Hopf led the team in rebounding with six and McKinney led the team in assists with three. Johnson set a new career high with four steals and also registered his first career block.
Up next, the Knights return to the derby city for a cross-town matchup with the Louisville Cardinals inside the KFC Yum! Center on Tuesday, November 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
