DETROIT, Mich. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team suffered its first loss the season, falling 73-71 to Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
After Detroit Mercy (2-0) hit a free throw with five seconds left, Bellarmine (3-1) got a great look on the other end to tie, but the Knights couldn't convert the contested layup as time expired.
Detroit Mercy had an incredible turnaround from the 3-point line in the fourth quarter. Heading into the last period, the Titans were 0-for-13 from long range, but they drained five of their six attempts (83.3 percent) from deep in the final stanza. The last, by Myonna Hooper, was a go-ahead triple with 38 seconds left.
Bellarmine trailed 72-70 with seven seconds left and had an opportunity to tie, but the Knights missed the front end of a pair at the line before hitting the second. BU then missed from close range on a potential game-tying buzzer-beater.
With a basket in the fourth quarter, senior guard
Hayley Harrison reached 1,000 points for her college career. Junior guard
Miyah Brown tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals while senior forward
Skylar Treadwell posted her first double-double as a Knight with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard
Hope Sivori collected 14 points, five rebounds and three assists while junior guard
Erin Toller registered 12 points.
The shooting percentages, both overall and from the 3-point line, ended up very similar. However, while neither team excelled from the charity stripe, Detroit Mercy hit 22-of-33 attempts (66.7) while Bellarmine was an uncharacteristic 14-for-23 (60.9 percent). BU was 23-of-25 from the line in its previous game against Ohio.
Rebounding and turnovers hurt Bellarmine in the first half, but the Knights only trailed 35-31 at halftime. BU improved significantly on the boards in the second half, and Toller's putback at the buzzer gave the Knights a 47-45 lead after three quarters.
Bellarmine held a five-point lead early in the fourth, but over the final 7:16, it was exclusively a one-possession game, with neither team leading by more than three points.
Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Monday at Purdue.
