LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If the box score is any indication, it was a fun night for the Bellarmine men's basketball team Tuesday inside Knights Hall. Every player who dressed for the Knights scored as they rolled to a 101-60 victory over Midway.
Leading scorer
Jack Karasinski (15 points) and
Ben Johnson (14 points) combined for 29 points, 27 in the first half, as
Scott Davenport was able to dig deep into his bench. Each Knight played at least eight minutes and no more than 17 minutes as the workload was spread around relatively evenly.
Bellarmine (2-5) quickly jumped out to an early 14-6 lead, forcing Midway (2-4) to use a timeout five minutes into the game. It would not get any better for the Eagles from there.
Johnson enjoyed a strong shooting night, hitting a three on four straight possessions, two from the left shoulder and one each from the top of the key and the right shoulder, to go on a personal 12-2 run to put Bellarmine up 42-20 with 5:29 remaining in the first.
The Knights would continue the first half onslaught, doubling up the Eagles 54-27 at the break. Johnson and Karasinski equaled Midway's first half total themselves with 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
Karasinski set the tone early in the second half with a shot fake, drive and slam to rattle the rim for the first points of the second stanza. That dunk set off a 12-2 Knights run to go up 66-29.
Bellarmine would lead by as many as 47 en route to the 41-point win, their largest margin of victory since they defeated Division III Wabash by 41 on December 6, 2022, 86-45.
Joining Karasinski and Johnson in double-digit scoring were
Billy Smith and
Myles Watkins with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Smith hit on 3-of-4 three-point attempts.
Tyler Doyle led the team with a career-high four assists and
Luke Anderson pulled down six rebounds, the first of his career. Doyle and
Landin Hacker each had three steals.
The list of milestones from Tuesday's game is extensive. Johnson's 4-for-4 effort from deep marked his highest three-point field goal total without a miss in his career.
Kenyon Goodin scored a career-high six points and Doyle matched his career high with eight points.
Three redshirt freshmen recorded their first career points on the evening. Anderson and
AJ Lux each scored theirs with a pair of free throws. Immediately following Lux's free throws, Anderson dunked home his first career field goal and
Grant Whitaker added his first career points with a layup. Lux then hit his first career field goal with a three from the left-shoulder to put Bellarmine up 81-35. Redshirt sophomore
Zach Reed added his first five points of the season, as well.
Anderson would finish with eight points, Whitaker with six and Lux with five.
The 101 points for Bellarmine were the most since they defeated Alice Lloyd, Midway's conference mate in the NAIA's River States Conference, 110-38 on December 4, 2022.
As a team, Bellarmine shot 58.5 percent from the field and held Midway to 35.3 percent. The Knights dominated on the glass, pulling down 50 rebounds to Midway's 23.
Up next, Bellarmine heads to Northern Kentucky on Saturday for their first matchup with the Norse since both programs were in the GLVC during the 2011-12 season. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+, Bally Sports Ohio and ESPN680.
