Knights defeat Morehead State 76-70 for D1-era record 5th win in a row

MOREHEAD, Ky. — It's barely a month into the season, and the Bellarmine University women's basketball team is already starting to accumulate new Division-I era program records.

The latest came Sunday afternoon at Morehead State, as the Knights established a new D1-era highwater mark with their fifth straight win after triumphing 76-70 over the Eagles at Johnson Arena.

Senior guard Hayley Harrison and junior guard Miyah Brown registered 16 points apiece for Bellarmine (8-2), which increased its already established D1-era record for nonconference victories to eight. Senior guard Ashlee Harris supplied 11 points, senior guard Hope Sivori chipped in 10 and senior forward Skylar Treadwell approached a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds against Morehead State (4-5).

Defense and free-throw shooting were crucial in Bellarmine's record-setting win. With 3:18 left in the fourth quarter, the Knights threatened to pull away after Brown followed a Sivori 3-pointer with an old-fashioned three-point play for a 66-60 lead.

However, Morehead State followed with a 7-0 run, seizing the advantage on a baseline jumper by Chrishawn Coleman with 45 seconds remaining. Sivori was then fouled in the backcourt and restored a Knights lead by sinking a pair of free throws.

After a timeout, Morehead State appeared to attempt to try to draw a foul on a drive, but the Eagle, guarded tightly by Harrison, missed badly. Harris was fouled and canned both shots for a 73-70 lead with 18 seconds left.

Harrison made another big play defensively to help seal it, interrupting a pass near midcourt that wound up going out of bounds off Morehead State. Harris drained another free throw to make it a two-possession game en route to victory.

Sivori dropped in a pair of 3-pointers, but Bellarmine largely attacked the basket, and its aggression was rewarded with 36 free-throw attempts, which was six more than its previous season high. The Knights, led by a 12-for-14 outing from Harrison, sank a season-best 28 shots from the charity stripe. They were 10-of-11 in the final period.

Bellarmine led 19-15 after the first quarter and boosted its advantage to 11 in the second, but Morehead State trimmed its deficit to 40-34 at halftime. The Eagles opened the second half with a bucket, and from there it was a four-point game for the vast majority of the last two periods.

Bellarmine will host Chattanooga at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
