LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The addition of pink to its wardrobe was a triumph not only in purpose but on the scoreboard as well for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team.
On Saturday afternoon in Freedom Hall, the Knights notched their first Atlantic Sun Conference home win of the season after pulling away from Queens in the fourth quarter of an 85-76 victory punctuated by astonishingly accurate performance from the free-throw line.
Adorned in pink to honor those affected by cancer, Bellarmine (8-15, 3-8 ASUN) posted its second-highest scoring effort in conference play, with a lot of the damage against Queens (6-18, 0-11) coming from the charity stripe. The Knights shot an eye-popping 97.1 percent from the FT line after sinking a sensational 34-of-35 attempts.
Nicole Gwynn and Jordyn Weaver combined for 55 points for Queens. Gwynn, who poured in a game-high 33, sank a buzzer-beater from near midcourt to end the third quarter as the Royals nearly erased an 18-point deficit in charging back to within 55-53.
Bellarmine steadily separated itself from Queens in the fourth with its marksmanship from the FT line. The Knights had 23 opportunities at the charity stripe in the last period alone and capitalized on 22 of them.
Several Knights racked up chances. Junior guard
Hayley Harrison was 10-for-10 from the FT line, sophomore guard
Miyah Brown was 8-of-8, senior guard
Ashlee Harris was 6-for-6 and senior forward Cam Browing was 7-of-8.
Harrison paced Bellarmine with 21 points, Browning recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Harris tallied 16 points and three steals, and Brown registered 15 points and six rebounds. Junior guard
Hope Sivori collected seven rebounds and six assists, and sophomore guard
Jayla Butler chipped in nine points off the bench for the Knights, who forced 22 Royals turnovers and converted them into 26 points.
Bellarmine burst out of the gate for a 13-0 lead and was ahead 24-10 following the first quarter after Browning sank a jumper just ahead of the horn. Less than three minutes into the second period, the lead ballooned to 18 and, although Queens raced back to within seven, Harris converted on a drive for a 42-31 halftime advantage.
Gwynn and Weaver rallied Queens within two in the third, but the Royals never drew even with Bellarmine. An old-fashioned three-point play by Harrison plus seven free throws comprised the scoring in a 10-2 run to open the fourth that pushed the Knights' lead back to double digits en route to the win. BU entered with two ASUN road victories, but this was its first conference "W" of the season in Freedom Hall.
Bellarmine will play at 6 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Central Arkansas.
