LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The opening act was nice. But that was nothing compared to the encore.
On Friday, the Bellarmine University women's tennis team swept a doubleheader, dispatching Marian 6-1 at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex before earning a groundbreaking 4-3 victory over Louisville at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Bellarmine (6-6) rallied from a 3-0 deficit against Louisville (4-3) to achieve its first win over a Power-5 program in the Division-I era. The Knights are on a three-match winning streak and, through just 12 matches, have already set a D1-era program record for victories by two triumphs.
The most recent was unquestionably among the biggest in program history. Trailing 3-0, junior
Yeva Kramarova triggered Bellarmine's comeback bid with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Allie Gretkowski at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore
Vendula Kryslova inched the Knights closer by dominating both tiebreakers in a 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-2) victory over Lika Peresypkina at No. 3. Freshman
Marika Caruk then leveled the match at 3-all after outlasting Lillian Mould 6-0, 6-7 (11-13), 6-4 at No. 2.
The ultra-competitive match fittingly came down to a tiebreaker in the third set at No. 6, and freshman
Nikola Kollaritsch summoned the poise and will to defeat Elena Noguero 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) to clinch the landmark victory for the Knights.
Louisville secured the doubles point, but junior
Ekaterina Tikhonko and Kryslova topped Jamilah Snells and Mould 7-6 (7-0) at No. 1, and No. 3 also went to a tiebreaker.
Bellarmine also tasted victory earlier in the day against Marian. The Knights collected the doubles point and swept the three matches behind the Nos. 1-3 teams of Kryslova/Tikhonko, freshman
Erica Kanna Hagi/Kollaritsch and Caruk/Kramarova.
Caruk (No. 1), Hagi (No. 3), Kramarova (No. 4), freshman
Lillie Willis (No. 5) and sophomore
Shu Grosso (No. 6) all won in straight sets.
