Johnson’s buzzer-beating three lifts Knights over Central Arkansas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If this story sounds familiar, that's because it has happened once already this season. A Ben Johnson buzzer-beating three-pointer from the left shoulder has lifted Bellarmine to a win. This time, the shot broke a tie in regulation at Freedom Hall to down Central Arkansas, 68-65.

Johnson finished with 14 points, hitting 4-of-11 three-point attempts, as he played the hero at the horn for the second time this month.

On February 1, his overtime left-shoulder three ripped the net with under a second remaining to put the Knights up one en route to a 96-95 win over Kennesaw State.

Like so many times this season, the Knights started out hot and jumped out to a lead before cooling down. They hit nine of their first 18 shots, including 4-of-8 from three, but led by just three, 24-21, with just under eight minutes left. The Bears, however, would go on a 19-8 run to close out the first half and take a 40-32 lead into the locker room.

The always resilient Knights would not lay down in the second half. They ran out to a 9-0 run to start the stanza, taking the lead back on a layup by Peter Suder with 79 seconds after the intermission. From that point on, there would be five ties and six more lead changes.

Suder hit a jumper with 1:34 left to put Bellarmine up 65-63, but committed a foul with 29 second left to send UCA's Daniel Sofield to the line. Sofield tied the game at 65-65 to set up another classic Ben Johnson moment.

Suder led the Knights with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, his highest output since scoring 20 against Austin Peay in Bellarmine's ASUN opener in January. He also dished out three assists and had three steals. The sophomore guard had scored just 19 points combined in the three games leading into Thursday.

Like Johnson, Bash Wieland scored 14 points. He finished 6-of-10 from the field.

For the Bears, Tucker Anderson scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, 5-of-9 from three.

Bellarmine will need another win on Senior Day Saturday against North Alabama to stay in the mix for a bid to the ASUN Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. ESPN+ and ESPN680 will have the live coverage.
