LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There was one final spot up for grabs in the ASUN Tournament.
And on Thursday night in Freedom Hall, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team seized it.
Junior guard
Hope Sivori led four scorers in double figures with 23 points, and the Knights wouldn't be denied in the fourth quarter of an 80-74 victory over Lipscomb that stamped their ticket to the postseason.
Sivori buried six 3-pointers and also had four assists and three steals for Bellarmine (9-18, 4-11 ASUN), which was battling North Florida for the last spot in the ASUN Tournament. They entered tied for 10th in the conference, but the Ospreys lost to FGCU on Thursday and the Knights own the deciding tiebreaker with a head-to-head victory over UNF, which allowed BU to clinch the berth with one game remaining.
Senior forward
Cam Browning had a monster game in the interior with 15 points and 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Junior guard
Hayley Harrison registered 18 points and five rebounds, and sophomore guard
Miyah Brown supplied 15 points and nine boards.
Sivori nailed four 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes as Bellarmine led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, but Lipscomb (16-12, 9-6) trimmed its deficit to 37-36 at halftime. Offensive struggles that began in the second period extended midway through the third for the Knights as the Bisons surged ahead for a 47-39 lead.
Harrison answered with a 3-pointer and Brown a traditional three-point play to shake Bellarmine out of its funk. The Knights caught up to Lipscomb at 66-all on a trifecta from Sivori with 6:39 left.
Bellarmine took the lead for good on a Browning free throw with roughly three minutes left, and Harrison followed with a jumper for a slight cushion. Browning powered in another basket and, after Lipscomb hit two free throws to cut it to one, Sivori converted a drive for a 77-74 lead with 42 seconds remaining.
After a defensive stop, Bellarmine missed a pair of free throws, but the Knights got another defensive stand when Harrison rebounded a missed 3-point attempt by the Bisons. She drained a pair to help seal a BU berth in the postseason.
Bellarmine was at its best in the last stanza. The Knights shot 53.3 percent in the fourth quarter — their best of the game — and defensively held Lipscomb to 30.8 percent — the Bisons' lowest of the contest. BU outscored Lipscomb 24-15 in the period.
Led by Browning, Bellarmine had a commanding 45-32 rebounding advantage, including 17-5 on the offensive glass. Claira McGowan had a mighty performance for Lipscomb with a game-high 29 points.
Bellarmine will host Austin Peay at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday in its regular-season finale. The Knights will celebrate Senior Day.
