Knights battle on the road again, but Queens pulls away in second half

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two days after an exhilarating buzzer-beating win over Kennesaw State, Bellarmine took the floor on the road once again and could not quite keep up with Queens, falling 85-75.

Queens (10-14, 4-6 ASUN) was able to halt the modest two-game winning streak of Bellarmine (6-18, 2-7 ASUN) largely due to their ability to get to the free throw line. The Royals outscored the Knights from the charity stripe 27-10 (33 attempts to 14).

Both teams shot the ball well, with Bellarmine finishing at 48.4 percent and Queens 50.9 percent. Neither team shot particularly well from distance, with the Knights going 5-for-17 and the Royals going 6-for-21. Bellarmine outscored Queens 44-38 in the paint, but it was not enough to overcome the difference at the free throw line.

Five Knights tallied double-figure points, led by Garrett Tipton's 16. Tipton last year averaged 24.5 points in two games against Queens. The fifth-year senior started off scorching with 14 points in the first half on 5-of-10 shooting, 3-of-6 from three. However, he was just 1-of-4 in the second half.

Dezmond McKinney ignited the Knights off the bench with 13 points, 11 in the second half, on 6-of-7 shooting. The junior guard also matched Peter Suder with a team-high three assists. It was his highest point total since scoring 16 against Evansville on Dec. 16.

Coming off career-high scoring efforts, Bash Wieland dropped in 17 on 6-of-12 shooting and Langdon Hatton added 15 on 6-of-11 shooting, 1-of-2 from three.

Peter Suder notched his first double-digit scoring effort in five tries. The sophomore guard finished with a game-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ben Johnson, who was hobbled after shootaround Saturday morning, attempted just four field goals and finished with two points in 21 minutes two days after playing the role of hero with a buzzer-beating three.

The teams both shot nearly 54 percent in the first half and each hit four threes, but the Royals took a three-point lead into the locker room, 41-38. Bellarmine's last lead of the game would come after a pair of Hatton free throws to make it 5-4 with 15:58 to play.

Queens started the second half on an 8-2 run, but Bellarmine would still hang around. Bellarmine eventually cut the lead to three on McKinney's bucket with 2:17 left, but that would be their final bucket of the game as they finished 0-for-7 from the field, 0-for-5 from three.

AJ McKee scored 24 points on 6-for-11 shooting for the Royals. Deyton Albury finished with 19 points and had half of Queens' six assists.

Bellarmine returns to Freedom Hall on Wednesday to face Stetson at 6:30 p.m. ET. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. ESPN+ and ESPN680 will have the live coverage.
