BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Bellarmine University baseball team was swept in a Saturday doubleheader at Samford, falling 16-0 and 14-3 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
In the first game, Samford (6-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Bellarmine (1-8) in the first inning. The Bulldogs steadily added to the lead before a seven-run sixth. Michael Ross tossed 6.0 shutout innings to notch the win.
Five different players had one hit for Bellarmine in the opener. Junior right-hander
Webster Walls threw a scoreless inning of relief.
In the second game, Bellarmine trailed just 3-1 after four innings, but Samford scored six in the fifth and five more in the sixth. The Bulldogs finished with 13 hits, and Brooks Rice struck out nine in 6.0 innings pitched while earning the win.
The teams will play another doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
