LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jacksonville took advantage of consecutive four-run innings in rallying to defeat the Bellarmine University baseball team 10-6 in an Atlantic Sun Conference series opener Friday at Knights Field.
Junior second baseman
Webster Walls and junior first baseman
Casey Sorg homered for Bellarmine (1-20, 0-4 ASUN), which held a 5-2 lead after four innings. However, Jacksonville (9-12, 3-1 ASUN) scored four runs in the fifth and matched that total in the sixth to build a cushion.
Sorg smashed a solo homer in the seventh — his third of the season — to cut the deficit to 10-6. Sophomore shortstop
Luke Scales then singled and Walls walked to start the eighth, but the pair was stranded at second and third, respectively. Although there was some solid contact, Bellarmine was retired in order in the ninth.
Blake Edmonds dealt the biggest blow for Jacksonville with a grand slam in the sixth. Tanner Zellem went deep and Aidan Masters had a two-run double the previous inning as the Dolphins mounted their comeback.
Bellarmine opened the scoring in the first on an RBI single by senior third baseman
Reed Blaszczyk. Walls tied the game at 2 in the second on his first homer of the season.
Bellarmine followed with three runs in the third. Scales rifled an RBI double, Walls successfully laid down a squeeze bunt and Scales scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead. Scales and Sorg had two hits apiece.
Senior left-hander
Steven Thom threw a pair of scoreless innings. Junior right-hander
Hudson Cornett, sophomore right-hander
Cole McMichael and sophomore right-hander
Holden Groher tossed 1.0 shutout inning each.
The teams will play the second game of the series at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
