Prolific offense, Johnson relief propel baseball to series-clinching win over UNF

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Another prolific day of offense coupled with sterling long relief from senior right-hander Ryan Johnson powered the Bellarmine University baseball team to a series-clinching 14-10 win over North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference action Friday at Knights Field.

Bellarmine (3-23, 2-6 ASUN) sealed the series after capturing a 12-6 victory in the opener against North Florida (14-11, 4-4). The Knights' offense, which has exploded recently, has now scored a minimum of 12 runs in its last four conference games.

Bellarmine's 19 hits were one shy of a season high and three off the Division I-era program record. Coming off a five-hit game, senior center fielder Will Aubel continued his torrid stretch by going 4-for-6 with two RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases, the latter of which tied a D1-era program record (Jack Ockerman, 2022).

Junior first baseman Casey Sorg, also on fire, went 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI. Senior third baseman Reed Blaszczyk and sophomore shortstop Luke Scales were both 3-for-3, with Blaszczyk adding three RBI. Junior second baseman Andres Castro was yet another Knight with multiple hits, as he collected two.

Initially, it looked like Bellarmine might cruise to the win. Junior designated hitter Matt Flaherty's two-run single in the first was followed by a five-run second. The Knights cleared the bases when Aubel laced an RBI single and two more runs came across on an error in the outfield, and Sorg and Scales then smacked RBI doubles for a 7-0 lead.

After North Florida scored three in the third, Bellarmine answered with two in the bottom half on an Aubel RBI single and Blaszczyk sacrifice fly. The Ospreys promptly responded with a five-run fourth and two-run fifth to seize the lead at 10-9.

The advantage was short-lived. Blaszczyk tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single. The next inning, Sorg barely missed a grand slam, but his double off the wall cleared the bases. Blaszczyk followed with another RBI single as the Knights stormed ahead 14-10.

Johnson took care of the rest. The righty entered in the sixth and proceeded to throw a career-high 4.0 innings. Johnson didn't allow a run and struck out two in earning the win.

The teams will conclude the series at noon (ET) Saturday.
