Baseball's high powered offense leads to sweep over ASUN foe North Florida

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Another outstanding day at the plate, paired with tremendous work out of the bullpen earned the Bellarmine University baseball team its third straight win over Atlantic Sun foe North Florida on Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.

With the win, the Knights improve to 4-23 overall and 3-6 in conference play while the loss drops the Ospreys to 14-12 overall and 4-5 in the ASUN.

As a team, Bellarmine tallied another 15 hits at the plate, bringing its weekend total to a whopping 47 hits in three games. Outfielder Will Aubel paced all Knights in the game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Infielders Casey Sorg, Reed Blaszczyk and Luke Scales all notched two hits in the contest as the top four hitters in the lineup combined for nine hits, eight runs batted in and eight runs scored.

North Florida kicked the game off with a run in the opening frame, thanks to a leadoff double and sacrifice fly to center field. The Ospreys would go on to score at least one run in each of the first four innings, putting up two runs in the third and four in the fourth, amassing all eight of their runs.

The Knights answered in the home half of the first, scoring two runs of their own. Aubel and Sorg led the frame off with a single each before the duo moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Blaszczyk soon brought both men home with a single of his own through the left side to give BU a 2-1 lead.

Just as North Florida scored early and often, Bellarmine was up to the task, scoring four runs in the second and two runs in the third. The Ospreys rallied to knot the game 8-8 after three and a half innings, but Bellarmine retook the lead in the fourth, plating a single run.

In the Knights four run second, Sorg drove in the first run of the inning before Scales roped a double to left center to bring home three more. The third inning saw outfielder Jake Agarwal reach base on an error, advancing to second on the same play before taking third on a failed pickoff attempt, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Aubel brought home another run in the frame with an RBI single to right field. In the fourth inning, designated hitter Jacob Rowold brought home the go-ahead run with a single up the middle to take a 9-8 lead.

Bellarmine added an insurance run in the fifth thanks to yet another RBI knock off the bat of Blaszcyzk, extending the lead to two at 10-8.

In the midst of the offensive onslaught, the Knights found much needed help out of the bullpen in right-hander Ross Goldschlag who delivered 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit while recording a strikeout.

The Knights tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of back-to-back RBI singles from infielder Andres Castro and Agarwal before southpaw reliever Thomas Sylvester shut North Florida down in the eighth.
Due to travel time restrictions, the game was called in the bottom of the eighth with Bellarmine securely in the lead 12-8.

Up next, the Knights cap of their four-game homestand with a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 2, against Ball State University. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET at Knights Field.
