Softball downed by late Austin Peay rally on Saturday afternoon

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A late inning rally by the Governors spelled the end for the Bellarmine University softball team on Saturday afternoon, dropping game three of the series 6-3 at Cathi Maynard Park.

With the loss, the Knights fall to 12-19 on the season, 4-5 in Atlantic Sun. With the win, Austin Peay improves to 17-17 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

After sitting the Knights down in order to open the game, the Govs went on the attack, scoring three runs in the home half of the inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.

In the second, Bellarmine got to work at the plate. Despite two quick outs to start the inning, freshman Nicole Waters drove a single into center field to keep the inning alive. Grad student Olivia Bricker followed with a single of her own before sophomore Madison Davis ripped the third consecutive single of the inning into center field to score Waters. Junior Kayla Bauer followed with yet another single, scoring Bricker to get the Knights back within one run, down 3-2.

Bellarmine kept its offense alive in the third, scoring another run thanks to an RBI single off the bat of junior transfer Serenity Shemwell to score fellow junior transfer Harlie Bickett, who singled to lead off the frame, tying the game at 3-3.

Austin Peay finally answered in the home half of the fifth, striking for another three runs, powered by a two-out, two run home run to retake the lead 6-3.

The Knights got a runner in scoring position in the sixth but were unable to score another run, falling 6-3 in the final game of the series.

Bickett led the way for the Knights at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run and a walk. Shemwell added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI and walk as the only two Knights to produce multiple hits on the day.

Up next, Bellarmine returns home for a four-game home stand starting with a midweek contest against Tennessee Tech University on Wednesday, April 3, at 4 p.m. ET.
