HUNTINGTON, WV — Marshall scored six runs in the second inning in defeating the Bellarmine University baseball team 10-2 Wednesday at Jack Cook Field.
Bellarmine (1-11) loaded the bases with no outs in the first but only managed one run on an RBI single by junior right fielder
Casey Sorg. The Knights didn't score again until sophomore catcher
Charlie Rife collected an RBI on a fielder's choice in the seventh.
Marshall (4-8) largely rode a strong start by Chad Heiner and its six-run second inning to the win. After escaping the jam in the first inning with only one run scored against him, Heiner settled in and yielded only two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings pitched.
Marshall only had three hits in that big second inning, but one was a two-run double and another a two-run homer. The Herd also had a three-run seventh.
Five players had one hit for Bellarmine. Senior right-hander
Nolan Pender struck out the side in the first and second. Junior right-hander
Hudson Cornett allowed only one run in 3.1 innings of relief. Senior left-hander
Steven Thom fanned two while retiring the side in order in the eighth.
Bellarmine will host Southern Indiana in a three-game series starting at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Friday.
