LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team's comeback bid fell just short in a 9-7 loss to Southern Indiana on Sunday at Knights Field.
Bellarmine (1-12) had the tying run at the plate with a runner on second and one out in the ninth, but Tyler Hutson ended the game with consecutive strikeouts for Southern Indiana (5-8).
Southern Indiana built a 7-1 lead after the top of the fifth, but Bellarmine started on the comeback trail with three runs in the bottom half. Junior second baseman
Andres Castro singled, stole second and scored an RBI triple by junior utility
Casey Sorg.
Junior outfielder
Jacob Rowold followed by drilling a two-run homer. His second long ball of the season cut the deficit to 7-4.
Southern Indiana responded in the sixth with a two-run homer by Tucker Ebest, but Bellarmine plated two runs in the eighth on an RBI double off the wall by senior outfielder
Will Aubel and an RBI single by sophomore shortstop
Luke Scales.
Rowold drove in another run in the ninth on a ground out after junior outfielder
Jake Agarwal and Sorg opened the inning with singles before Southern Indiana was able to turn back the Knights.
Rowold drove in three runs and Sorg and Aubel notched two hits each as Bellarmine compiled 10 for the game. USI had 11 hits and its six pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.
Senior left-hander
Steven Thom tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. (ET) Monday.
