FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team's season came to an end Friday, as the 10th-seeded Knights were defeated 79-62 by ninth-seeded Jacksonville in the first round of the ASUN Championship at FGCU's Alico Arena.
The third quarter was the difference for Jacksonville (11-19). The Dolphins and Knights (10-19) were knotted at 28 at halftime, but JU outscored BU 33-18 in the third stanza.
Jacksonville went 9-for-15 from the field but also 13-of-17 from the FT line in the third, when 12 fouls were called on Bellarmine and 18 total between the two teams. Edyn Battle, the ASUN scoring champion, finished with a game-high 24 points for the Dolphins.
Senior forward
Cam Browning recorded her third straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while adding four assists for Bellarmine. Junior guard
Hayley Harrison tallied 17 points and six rebounds, junior guard
Hope Sivori notched 10 points and five assists, and senior guard
Ashlee Harris supplied 10 points.
Jacksonville shot an even 50 percent and held Bellarmine to 35.9 percent. However, the scoring was virtually identical except for the decisive third quarter.
Bellarmine led 15-12 after the first quarter and by five on a few occasions in the second quarter before the teams were deadlocked at halftime. Jacksonville didn't take control immediately in the third period — the Dolphins built a comfortable lead with a 20-5 run over the last 4:41 of the foul-heavy frame.
Jacksonville will play top-seeded FGCU on Saturday night in the quarterfinals.
