NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lipscomb scored five runs in the sixth inning in pulling away from the Bellarmine University baseball team for an Atlantic Sun Conference series-clinching 9-3 win Sunday at Dugan Field.
Lipscomb (21-29, 15-12 ASUN) won the series opener and finale against Bellarmine (8-43, 7-20). The teams were actually even in hits at nine apiece, but the Bisons drew eight walks to none for the Knights.
Bellarmine was within striking distance after five innings, trailing 4-1, but Lipscomb scored five runs in the decisive sixth. Trace Willhoite launched a three-run homer and Will Lee followed with a two-run shot in the frame.
In the first inning, senior center fielder
Will Aubel swiped second and third base — upping his stolen-base total to 22 on the season — before scoring on a wild pitch for Bellarmine. The Knights were unable to score again until sophomore shortstop
Luke Scales' sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Junior first baseman
Casey Sorg doubled and scored on a ground out by junior second baseman
Andres Castro in the eighth.
Sophomore third baseman
Brady Morse and junior right fielder
Jake Agarwal notched two hits apiece for Bellarmine. Junior right-hander
Mike Sokol tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, and freshman right-hander
Chase Carver added a shutout frame.
Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Southern Illinois in its final midweek game of the season.
