Baseball splits DH, ends season in triumphant fashion with win over Queens in finale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This season has been a showcase for Will Aubel's legs.

But on the final play of the year, it was the senior center fielder's arm that took center stage.

Aubel gunned down a Queens runner at the plate for the last out in a 6-4 victory Saturday in the tail end of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at Knights Field.

That second game represented the season finale as Bellarmine (10-45, 9-21 ASUN) went out on a high note. The Knights clinched the series against the Royals (14-41, 10-20) after also winning the series opener.

Queens did, however, win Game 2, which was the initial contest of Saturday's doubleheader. A solo homer and a three-run shot in the fifth inning was followed by a three-run sixth as the Royals captured an 11-7 win.

Bellarmine trailed 4-1 in the seven-inning tail end but rallied to tie with a three-run fourth. Junior first baseman Casey Sorg and sophomore third baseman Brady Morse delivered RBI singles before sophomore shortstop Luke Scales drilled a game-tying RBI double off the wall.

In the fifth, Bellarmine overtook Queens when junior catcher Matt Flaherty unloaded a mammoth two-run, go-ahead homer, his sixth long ball of the season.

In the last inning, Queens had runners on first and second with two outs when Tyler Cotto singled to center. Aubel, whose speed has been on display all season via his 23 stolen bases, charged in hard and came up throwing to home. His toss to Flaherty was a bull's-eye, and the Knights catcher tagged out the sliding Royals baserunner attempting to score for the final out.

Senior right-hander Nolan Pender capped his career by earning the win. He struck out the side in both the fourth and fifth innings. Pender piled up nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.

Senior right-hander Ross Goldschlag followed by securing his fourth save of the season. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings to close it out.

Scales had an RBI single in the first inning and finished 3-for-4 in the tail end. Sorg, Flaherty and senior designated hitter Davis Crane, who doubled in his final career at-bat, notched two hits apiece.

Although it lost Saturday's opener, Bellarmine did amass 12 hits. One of those was a three-run homer by Morse, his third round-tripper of the season.

Another was a two-run blast from sophomore catcher Charlie Rife, who hit a towering drive just over the foul pole for his sixth homer of the year.

Sophomore left fielder Joey Milto and Crane had RBI singles in the contest. Morse, Scales, Crane, Rife and junior second baseman Andres Castro registered two hits each. Freshman right-handers Chase Carver and Sam Matherly both tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

On Senior Day, Bellarmine honored Aubel, Crane, Pender, Steven Thom, Reed Blaszczyk, Ryan Johnson, Webster Walls, Devin Ecklar, Thomas Sylvester and Blake Donnan.
