Women's soccer endures hard-luck loss to Morehead State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The soccer gods weren't just unkind to the Bellarmine University women's soccer team Thursday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, they were downright cruel.

The Knights had three shots deflect off the woodwork among a host of agonizing near-misses in a 1-0 loss to Morehead State, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference champion.

The one goal came in the 37th minute. BB Bonzeim made a long lead pass to Hedda Omberg, who broke away from the defense and converted the 1v1 for Morehead State (3-1-1).

Only one goal being produced in the contest couldn't have been more deceiving. Morehead State certainly had chances to boost its lead, and Bellarmine (1-2) was seemingly shaking its head in frustration most of the game.

In the second half, senior forward and reigning ASUN Player of the Week Emma Nicholson whipped a shot off the left post, and junior forward Lucy von Stefenelli barely overshot the crossbar on her rebound attempt.

There was another double whammy later in the second half. Within seconds, freshman midfielder Brynn Severance had not one but two straight header attempts carom off the crossbar.

With one minute left, Nicholson was whistled for offsides on what appeared to be a borderline call and just ahead of a shot that was laced inside the near post. It capped a night in which Bellarmine seemed completely devoid of any luck.

The Knights created several opportunities in the first half as well. Sophomore midfielder Sydni Whitehead struck the ball well from 20 yards twice and was just a little off. Sophomore defender Teagan Douglas came close to driving in a header on the back end of a set piece, but it was a little right.

For the match, Bellarmine had a 16-11 advantage in shots; Morehead State had a 4-3 edge on frame. The Knights racked up 11 shots in the second half, and senior goalkeeper Cambria Kingman notched three saves.

Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Middle Tennessee.
