Tuncay scores golden goal as Field Hockey wins 2-1 in OT at SLU

Knights take one of two from their St. Louis trip

ST. LOUIS, MO -- Annie Malloy commemorated her homecoming by scoring a goal for the Knights in the second quarter and Luna Tuncay sealed it with a golden goal as Bellarmine Field Hockey notched its first win of the 2024 season, defeating the Saint Louis Billikens on the road 2-1 in overtime.

"It was great to come away with an OT win against SLU today, especially after the OT loss yesterday," said head coach Devanny Boisvert.  "We made some key adjustments and saw significant improvement in our outletting from the backs, ball movement through the midfield, and forward leads in our attacking 25.  We're thrilled that the team was able to finish in the circle, and it's exciting to see Annie and Luna earn their first collegiate goals."

The Knights got the offense going early today, recording two of the first three shots of the game and affording themselves the game's first penalty corner opportunity.  After Bellarmine blocked a SLU shot on a penalty corner of their own, the game remained scoreless going into the second quarter. The Knights survived two more corners from the Billikens to begin the second quarter before securing two of their own in quick succession. On the second, Malloy found the back of the net off of a pass from Anna Crump, who recorded her second assist in as many games on the season, to give Bellarmine a 1-0 lead that they would carry into halftime.

After the two teams failed to take advantage of penalty corners back-to-back, SLU found the equalizer with 8:55 remaining in the third quarter.  Tuncay got off two subsequent shots, but was unable to score as the game remained tied 1-1 heading into the fourth quarter.  Crump recorded two shots in the final period off of two Tuncay penalty corners, but was unable to capitalize.  The Billikens had a corner opportunity of their own in the final four seconds of regulation, but were unable to get a shot off as the game went into overtime.

SLU got off the first shot two minutes into the extra period, but Kailey Workman was able to come up with a game-preserving save.  A minute and a half later, Tuncay scored the golden goal off a pass from Crump to win the game for the Knights.

The game was evenly matched throughout, as the Knights outshot the Billikens 12-11 and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.  The two teams each recorded five saves and six penalty corners.  Crump led the Knights with four shots to go along with her two assists.  Crump has assisted on all three Bellarmine goals through two games this season.  Tuncay had a team-high three shots on goal.  Skylar Sokal also recorded two shots on goal.

Up next, the Knights will head to Lawrence Township, NJ to face the Broncos of Rider University on Friday at 4 PM ET.

"We'll celebrate our first win of the season and quickly shift focus to prepare for a short week before heading to New Jersey and New York."  said Coach Boisvert.
