Men's soccer raids record book in 8-0 throttling of USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Heading into Saturday night's match with Southern Indiana, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team had yet to score a goal in the first half of a game this season.

The Knights took a sledgehammer to that run of futility against their former Division II archrival at Strassweg Field. And then just kept pounding away in the second half.

Bellarmine piled up three goals before the break and continued its raid on the net in the second stanza as the Knights laid waste to the Division I-era program record book in an 8-0 romp over the Screaming Eagles.

Bellarmine (2-2-2) and Southern Indiana (0-6) were charter members of the GLVC, which began men's soccer in 1979, and the Knights are now 2-0 against the Screaming Eagles since both transitioned to D1.

The latest meeting saw nothing but high points for Bellarmine:
  • With eight goals, the Knights nearly tripled the previous D1-era program record of three. They had that mark topped by the 53rd minute.
  • Bellarmine's eight assists were not only a D1-era record, they were the second most overall in program history.
  • Bellarmine's 24 points ranked third overall in program history in addition to setting a new D1-era standard.
  • Bellarmine's 17 shots on goal tied for second overall in program history and fell just one short of the record while being a new D1-era highwater mark.
  • Bellarmine's 22 total shots ranked second in the D1 era; the top-2 marks have both come against Southern Indiana, with the Knights unloading 25 in the 2022 matchup.
  • Freshman midfielder Nick Harshaw recorded Bellarmine's fifth brace in the D1 era after scoring two goals.
  • Freshmen Harshaw, forward Johan Nissen-Lie, forward Teddy Franke and defender Martin Cadagan all tallied their first collegiate goals.
  • Sophomore defender Jeffrey Cox netted his second goal of the year and accounted for the game-winner. Senior forward Chris Shust also delivered his second goal of the season, and sophomore forward Alex Halevy notched his first.
  • Senior defender Austin Yowell and junior defender Rhys Davies both supplied an assist to bump their respective season totals to three.
  • Sophomore midfielder Calle Sjoberg distributed his first two assists of the season. Freshman defender Nore Sumner posted the first two assists of his college career while sophomore defender Karl Lundstrom Svahnqvist and freshman midfielder Sawyer Trowel recorded their first respective college helpers.
  • Bellarmine's defense earned its second clean sheet of the season.
Bellarmine will open ASUN play by hosting Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
