NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In one of the program's most impressive defensive performances in the Division-I era, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw Sunday with reigning Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season champion Lipscomb at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Lipscomb (5-2-2, 1-0-1 ASUN) entered the match against Bellarmine (1-6-2, 0-1-1) on a three-game winning streak in which the Bisons piled up 10 goals, bookending three apiece against Coastal Carolina and ASUN foe Eastern Kentucky around four against Power-5 opponent Ole Miss.
Although Lipscomb amassed an estimable 33 shots, Bellarmine stopped the Bisons' scoring onslaught in its tracks while registering a hard-earned point for the draw. The clean sheet was the Knights' second of the season but first against a D1 opponent — they shut out D3 Asbury 8-0 on Aug. 25.
Lipscomb's sheer volume of shots was eye-popping, but Bellarmine's defense didn't spring leaks and allowed a minimum of truly dangerous chances. The bulk of the Bisons' attempts came outside of the box and were largely non-threatening.
When they weren't,
Cambria Kingman was there to make the stop. The senior goalkeeper racked up 10 saves, which were two off her season high of 12 against Louisville and tied for the third most by a Bellarmine goalie in the D1 era. It was Kingman's fifth outing of five saves or more this year.
Although Bellarmine only attempted four shots, the Knights actually may have come the closest to scoring. On a corner kick in the second half, Bellarmine nearly bent the ball inside the far post, but a Lipscomb defender cleared the ball near the line. A few Knights immediately argued that the ball crossed the line, but it was to no avail.
Bellarmine will host Stetson in an ASUN matchup at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
