LOUISVILLE, Ky. — FGCU rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Bellarmine University women's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference play in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Freshman forward
McKenzie Carle netted her first collegiate goal for Bellarmine (2-7-2, 1-2-1 ASUN) in the first half, but reigning ASUN Tournament champion FGCU (4-5-1, 3-1) scored twice in the second stanza and held off the Knights.
After delivering the game-winning goal in the 90th minute of a 2-1 victory over Stetson in its previous match, Bellarmine nearly equalized the contest against FGCU in the final minute. In a mad scramble around the center of the 6 after a Knights corner kick, senior defender
Brooklynn Allen managed to rip a shot from 8 yards, but an Eagle was there defending the line and made a defensive save by heading it out.
Bellarmine's strong first half produced a 1-0 lead at the break. Junior defender
Sidney Rigsby made a long run down the left side before her through ball found Carle at the top of the box, and Carle slotted a shot between the legs of the FGCU goalkeeper and into the net.
FGCU leveled the contest in the 53rd minute. Ashley Labbe created a steal in the box, and Katharine Oelschlaeger capitalized with a goal.
Labbe then accounted for the game-winner in the 67th minute. She converted off a long lead pass from Courtney Corcoran.
FGCU finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots, including 7-5 on goal, but Bellarmine had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Bellarmine will play an ASUN contest at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday at North Alabama.
