DAVIDSON, N.C. – A tumultuous road trip for the Bellarmine field hockey team came to an end Monday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Appalachian State.
The game, originally scheduled for Friday evening in Boone, was moved to the campus of Davidson, whom Bellarmine played on Sunday, following the disastrous flooding in western North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene late last week.
Junior keeper
Kailey Workman recorded a career-high 14 saves on the afternoon, her third double-digit save performance for Bellarmine in 2024. But it would not be enough to rally the Knights against the persistent offense of the Mountaineers.
App State (6-3, 3-0 MAC) controlled the flow of the game, outshooting Bellarmine (2-7, 0-2 MAC) 28-0, 17-0 on goal, en route to the win. The Knights held the Mountaineers scoreless in the first half, but Bridget Donovan was able to break the scoreless tie with just under two minutes left in the third. Franziska Heyltjes and Frederique Grimberge added scores in the final seven minutes of the game to put it out of reach. Noa Ginjaume Matas and Hadley Kuzmicky recorded assists for ASU.
The Knights are back in action Friday at 1 p.m. ET at Central Michigan. It will be the second tussle between the two teams this season. CMU won 2-1 in overtime in St. Louis in the season's first game for each team, though that game did not count as a MAC game as Friday's will.
