Women's soccer guts out 1-1 draw with Sycamores in physical clash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior goalkeeper Cambria Kingman thwarted a penalty kick inside the last five minutes in capping off a gritty performance by the Bellarmine University women's soccer team in a 1-1 draw with Indiana State on Thursday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Junior forward Lucy von Stefenelli scored a second-half goal for Bellarmine (1-3-1) while freshman forward McKenzie Carle notched an assist against Indiana State (4-1-1). Kingman racked up eight saves for the Knights.

The last by Kingman was ostensibly a game-saver. Bellarmine played a man down for roughly the last 10 minutes, and the Knights were called for a foul in the box while attempting to fend off an ISU attack in the 86th minute.

Wimberley Wright took the penalty kick attempt for the Sycamores. She went high left with her chance, but Kingman read it perfectly, popped it straight up into the air and corralled it with ease. Kingman also stopped a 1v1 and had two diving saves on the night.

After a scoreless first half, Bellarmine broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute on von Stefenelli's third goal of the season. From near the end line, Carle crossed to Stefenelli just inside the 6, and she ripped it into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the first assist, and point, for Carle in her collegiate career.

Indiana State equalized the contest in the 73rd minute. The Sycamores maintained possession after a corner kick, and Alex Lehnert made a nice move to free herself up and equaled it with a quality strike to knot the match up.

Indiana State finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots, including 9-4 on frame.

Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) next Thursday at Northern Kentucky.
