LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team will face Queens at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday in its Atlantic Sun Conference road opener before returning to Knights Hall to welcome Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Although Austin Peay (6-7, 1-1 ASUN) will represent Bellarmine's third home opponent in four conference games, the preceding matchup with Queens (6-7, 0-2) begins a stretch of five road outings over six contests. The Knights (10-5, 1-1) will enter a four-game road swing following this week's action.
ABOUT QUEENS
Bellarmine marks the ASUN home opener for Queens. The Royals are seeking their first conference win after falling 81-58 at FGCU and 69-61 at Stetson last week. Queens had a four-game winning streak during nonconference play. Forward Jordyn Weaver is tied for sixth in the ASUN in scoring (14.4) and tied for seventh in rebounding (7.2) while ranking fourth in field-goal percentage (48.3) and fifth in free-throw percentage (78.3). Weaver has scored in double figures in every game and posted four double-doubles. She averaged 15.0 points last week against FGCU and Stetson.
ABOUT AUSTIN PEAY
Austin Peay, which opens the week Wednesday at North Alabama, split its first two ASUN games, both at home. The Governors fell 72-58 to Eastern Kentucky before regrouping for a 60-52 victory over North Florida. Forward Sa'Mya Wyatt swept the ASUN Player, Newcomer and Freshman of the Week awards after going a combined 14-for-16 from the field while averaging 18.0 points in the two games. She ranks second in the conference in field-goal percentage (58.7) and is tied for 10th in scoring (13.3). Guard La'Nya Foster is averaging 11.2 points while ranking second in the ASUN in total blocks (21) and steals per game (2.1) and sixth in rebounding (7.4).
LAST WEEK'S ACTION
Although it came up just shy of a sweep, Bellarmine had a solid start to ASUN action, rallying from a 22-point second-half deficit to force overtime in a 90-89 loss to North Alabama before posting a resilient 68-60 win over Central Arkansas, which ranked second in the ASUN preseason coaches' poll. In doing so, the Knights tied a Division I-era program record with their 10th victory — and that's with nearly two months left in the regular season. Bellarmine's fourth quarter against the Sugar Bears was particularly notable, as the Knights began the frame by hitting their first five shots during a game-changing 13-0 run. In the first six-plus minutes of the final period, BU outscored UCA 25-6.
