Sivori steal, 3-point play leads final-minute comeback as Knights edge Royals

Harrison becomes 29th member of BU 1,000-point club

CHARLOTTE, NC — The second you don't account for Hope Sivori, the Bellarmine University women's basketball senior guard is liable to pick your pocket before you even realize she was near you.

The Atlantic Sun Conference leader in total steals had such a moment Wednesday night at Curry Arena, with one of the biggest thefts of her career premeditating a go-ahead, traditonal three-point play as the Knights rallied from a four-point deficit in the final minute to stun Queens 71-67.

With the seventh of her game-high 20 points, Hayley Harrison became the 29th member of Bellarmine's 1,000-point club. The senior guard had previously reached 1K points for her college career, but now she's also accomplished the feat strictly as a Knight. Raven Merriweather (2014-18), who is now a Bellarmine assistant coach, was the last player to reach the milestone.

Bellarmine (11-5, 2-1 ASUN) set a new Division I-era program record with its 11th win and tied its D1-era highwater mark with its fourth road victory. In yet another step taken for the program by beating Queens (6-8, 0-3), the triumph means BU boasts a winning record in ASUN play for the first time.

Bellarmine achieved victory despite what the Knights undoubtedly considered a subpar performance. BU built a 10-point lead in the third quarter but proceeded to get mired in a funk.

Queens rallied and cut its deficit to one on several occasions. The Royals finally broke through with two minutes left in the fourth, as they took the lead and then went up 66-62 with a minute left behind a 7-0 run.

Senior forward Skylar Treadwell bracketed a pair of baskets around a Queens free throw to bring Bellarmine back to within one with 21.2 seconds left. After a timeout, the Royals, from the left sideline, made an inbounds pass near midcourt.

In a split second, Sivori, who had been guarding the inbounder, darted toward the ballhandler, swooped in and stole the ball from the unsuspecting Royal. She raced to the other end, converted the layup while getting fouled and completed the old-fashioned three-point play for a 69-67 lead with 15.2 seconds remaining.

If they weren't already, the basketball gods smiled on the Knights as Queens shockingly missed a wide-open layup to tie with about five seconds left. Senior guard Ashlee Harris made the Royals pay, sinking a pair of free throws to ice the victory.

Sivori tied a career high — for the fourth time no less — with five steals while racking up 15 points. Treadwell notched 13 points and eight rebounds, and Harris chipped in 10 points. Harrison supplied six rebounds and four assists in addition to her 20 points.

Although Bellarmine struggled from the field, the Knights' ability to draw fouls may have ultimately been the difference. BU was 29-of-40 from the free-throw line while Queens was 13-of-24.

Bellarmine will host Austin Peay in an ASUN contest at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
