LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Eastern Kentucky scored twice inside the last 15 minutes in rallying for a 2-1 win over the Bellarmine University women's soccer team Sunday in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
It was a heartbreaking result for Bellarmine (8-4-2, 2-4), which for the vast majority of the contest against Eastern Kentucky (9-2-3, 4-1-1) appeared as if it would pull off an incredible turnaround from the previous weekend when the Colonels defeated the visiting Knights 5-1.
Bellarmine took a 1-0 lead into halftime on
McKenzie Carle's eighth goal of the season. The sophomore forward wouldn't be denied from the right wing in the 19th minute when she beat an EKU defender and slipped a shot inside the 6 past the lunging goalkeeper and into the net.
Bellarmine had a pair of near-misses from point-blank range in the opening minute and a few more close chances after Carle's goal where the Knights could have built upon the lead that ultimately loomed large.
Eastern Kentucky equalized the match in the 78th minute on an Ana Manning rebound goal off the saved shot of Avery May. The Colonels then grabbed the lead in the 86th minute when Maddie Murphy finished off a combination of passes from Chiara Premoli and May.
Bellarmine finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots, including 9-6 on frame. The Knights had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bellarmine will continue ASUN play at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Central Arkansas.
