LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was a stress-free afternoon for Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium as the sprint football team rolled over Oakland City 45-7 on Senior Day.
For the second straight week, running back
Brenden Reid set a season high in rushing yards by a Knight, netting 200. It was, again, the most for the senior since he matched his own program record 232 yards on September 16, 2023 against Oakland City.
Bellarmine (3-2) wasted no time announcing their intentions on the afternoon.
Quarterback
Vernon Duncan, who earned the start on his Senior Day, guided the Knights down a short field on their first possession before finding
Ethan Barnett in the back of the endzone on a play-action rollout for the game's first score. Duncan would then add a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak to put the Knights up 14-0.
Reid, then, rushed for touchdowns on the Knights' next two possessions, one for 12 yards and one for 13, to put Bellarmine up 28-0.
Quarterback
Dylan Morris took over for Duncan on the Knights' fourth drive. The freshman added an 18-yard touchdown to
Aiden Bratcher to put the Knights up 35-0 and finished with 43 yards passing.
Freshman kicker
Luke Vallandingham added a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter, the second-longest field goal in program history behind Caiden Mellecker's 43-yarder at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on October 7, 2023.
Oakland City (0-5) finally got on the board with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Caton Wilson to Brendle Brennan with seven seconds left in the first half. It gave the Mighty Oaks their first points against the Knights in nearly seven full quarters dating back to last season's finale.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Knights added to their lead in the fourth on a
Mareese Naves 15-yard rush, the first touchdown of the freshman back's career, to bring the game to its final score of 45-7.
On defense, freshmen
Blake Draper and
Bradan Ryan notched their first career interceptions.
Bellarmine improved to 4-0 all-time against Oakland City as they celebrated seniors Reid, Duncan, defensive back
Gavin Brazzell, linebacker
Caleb Murray, two-way lineman
Roy Shrout and defensive back
Lance Weiter. Reid, Murray and Shrout are the only three players to have been with Bellarmine during all four of its seasons.
The Knights head up I-65 to face Calumet next Saturday at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT).
