Dimmitt's 2nd-half goal propels women's soccer to key 1-0 road win over UNA

Jenkins collects career-high 11 saves in Knights' shutout

FLORENCE, Ala. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team picked itself up off the mat and remained in the fight.

On Sunday afternoon at the Cox Creek Sports Complex, freshman midfielder Nora Dimmitt scored midway through the second half and the Knights buckled in defensively to record a 1-0 win over North Alabama in Atlantic Sun Conference action.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Bellarmine (9-5-2, 3-5 ASUN), which firmly remained in contention for an ASUN Tournament bid with the Gold Division victory. The Knights swept the season series with North Alabama (7-5-5, 3-3-3) after also edging the Lions 1-0 in Louisville.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Anna Jenkins piled up a career-high 11 saves for Bellarmine. The Knights' defense posted its sixth shutout of the season.

The clean sheet certainly wasn't easy. North Alabama had a 17-6 advantage in shots — including one attempt that pinballed off both posts before ricocheting out — with a 12-5 superiority on frame.

North Alabama was unlikely to garner much sympathy from Bellarmine. In their four-game skid, the Knights never got outshot and they amassed six attempts or more than their opponent in three of those matches. Twice in Thursday's 1-0 loss at Central Arkansas, BU dinged the crossbar.

So Bellarmine was due to get a favorable bounce or two.

It happened when North Alabama had a shot hit off the left post and then deflect perfectly parallel off the right post, straddling the plane but never breaking it.

Bellarmine struggled to generate chances against the ASUN's stingiest defense (0.71 goals-against average), but the Knights ultimately needed to make good on just one. It came in the 66th minute, when there was a deflection at the 8 that caromed toward the top of the box. Dimmitt wheeled around the bouncing ball and ripped a one-touch inside the right post to break up the scoreless deadlock.

Bellarmine's defense made sure Dimmitt's second goal of the season held up as the game-winner. The Lions' most threatening chances all came before she found the net — the Knights dug in and didn't allow another truly dangerous challenge to their own net.

In the process, Bellarmine built upon its Division I-era program records for wins (nine) and road victories (six).

It's a short week for Bellarmine, which will finish the regular season with two home games. The Knights will host Lipscomb at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday and Austin Peay at 6 p.m. Saturday, both a day earlier than a typical ASUN week of play.
