Men's soccer settles for draw with Lipscomb after go-ahead goal is overturned

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team had a go-ahead goal inside the last 10 minutes overturned as the Knights had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Lipscomb on Saturday night in Atlantic Sun Conference play at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

Bellarmine (8-3-3, 3-1-1 ASUN) earned a point with the stalemate against Lipscomb (1-8-6, 0-2-3), but the Knights undoubtedly expected more after sophomore forward Teddy Franke rifled a shot into the net off a loose ball following a set piece in the waning minutes.

Unfortunately for Bellarmine, Franke's go-ahead goal was overturned after a video review. There was a Knight a few yards away from the goalkeeper and stationed between the goalie and the last line of defenders when Franke's shot was taken who was ultimately called for an infraction upon video inspection.

The reversal was a huge blow for Bellarmine. Had the goal stood and the Knights hung on for a win, they would have owned a two-point lead over Central Arkansas for the top spot in the ASUN Gold Division with one game remaining; instead, they are tied for first place with the Bears with 10 points apiece.

Bellarmine took a 1-0 lead into halftime after redshirt junior midfielder Tate McCrery netted his second goal of the season in the 26th minute. McCrery poked the ball into the net after a header pass from redshirt junior defender Jeffrey Cox off a throw-in from redshirt sophomore defender Sam Safly.

Lipscomb equalized in the 51st minute off an exceptional strike from Robert Rodriguez. The Knights would then force multiple diving saves by Bisons goalkeeper Alex Kara, but neither team would score again — not officially anyway.

The shot count was mostly balanced. Lipscomb had a slight 13-11 advantage in total attempts, but Bellarmine had a 4-3 edge on frame. Corner kicks were even at five apiece.

Bellarmine will conclude the regular season at 6 p.m. (ET) next Saturday at Queens.
