Men's soccer advances to ASUN title game after defeating Jacksonville in PKs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Tudor Iordan came in cold. Actually, make that ice cold considering the frigid conditions Monday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

But minutes later the junior goalkeeper experienced the rush of a heat wave in the inferno of a Bellarmine University men's soccer celebration that engulfed the surrounding track at the "O.B."

Following an official 1-1 draw in the semifinals of the ASUN Championship, Iordan entered in the penalty-kick shootout and stopped two Jacksonville attempts while the Knights buried four of their tries, the latter clinching a 4-2 win and the punching of their ticket to the title game.

The final will pit the two ASUN one seeds against each other. Gold Division champion and top seed Bellarmine (8-3-5) will travel to Graphite Division champion and top seed North Florida with a title and NCAA Tournament berth on the line at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Hodges Stadium. The Ospreys also advanced in PKs, defeating Graphite Division three-seed Stetson 4-3 after a scoreless draw.

Bellarmine will be making its second showing in the ASUN finals in three seasons after also appearing in 2023. The Knights have made their run to the championship game in the 28th and final year of Tim Chastonay, who is retiring from head coaching at the end of the season.

Both of Monday evening's goals came in the first half. Iver Skorve of Graphite Division two-seed Jacksonville (6-7-5) put a header away off a set piece in the 25th minute, while Bellarmine senior defender Rhys Davies drilled a penalty kick in the 42nd minute after redshirt senior midfielder Jackson Marks drew a foul in the box.

PKs would ultimately be the story of the semifinal for Bellarmine after the teams remained deadlocked at 1 at the end of regulation and two scoreless overtimes. Five-foot-11 redshirt senior Peter Van Euwen made several superb saves in the match, but the 6-foot-3 Iordan's number was called by Chastonay for the shootout.

With a temperature in the 30s, Iordan hastily warmed up. Sophomore forward Johan Nissen-Lie sank Bellarmine's first attempt, but the Knights trailed 2-1 after two rounds. Senior midfielder Collin Folds opened the third round with a make, and Iordan dived left to stop Iver Skorve's chance.

Sophomore forward Teddy Franke ripped in his attempt for a 3-2 lead, and Iordan smothered the ensuing shot of Nahne Paulsen. That save set up Davies with the opportunity to seal the shootout win at the start of the fifth round, and he delivered, rifling the clincher into the net.

Davies raced toward the fans' side of the surrounding track, joyfully flinging off his shirt before being mobbed by his teammates.

Bellarmine finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots, but Jacksonville had an 8-6 edge on frame. The Dolphins also had an 8-4 favor in corner kicks.
