LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Amber Scalia had a big first half and handed off to Ilse de Vries in the second stanza as Miami (OH) defeated the Bellarmine University women's basketball team 77-58 on Sunday afternoon in Knights Hall.
Junior guard
Triniti Ralston sank all 12 of her free-throw attempts in registering a team-high 21 points in addition to team bests of six rebounds and four assists for injury-laden Bellarmine (1-3). Sophomore guard
Ava Smith notched 11 points and redshirt junior guard
Rose Jamison chipped in 10 points.
Scalia powered Miami (4-1) to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and 35-23 advantage at halftime. She piled up 20 points behind 6-for-9 shooting, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, over the first two quarters. Scalia finished with a game-high 26 points for the RedHawks, who earned a WNIT berth last season.
After a scoreless first half, de Vries went 6-for-7 from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep, in the third quarter alone, exploding for 15 points in the period as Miami took a 57-44 lead into the fourth. She finished with 17 points and six assists as the RedHawks shot 48 percent from the field.
Bellarmine was within six early in the third quarter after Jamison followed a traditional three-point play by nailing a shot from long range. Miami extended the lead back into double digits with a little under four minutes remaining in the period and didn't falter from there.
Bellarmine will play at 11 a.m. (ET) Wednesday at Wright State.
