WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Bellarmine Knights Sprint Football played competitively for a half, but ultimately saw its 2025 season come to an end with a 41-14 road loss to the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys in the semifinal round of the MSFL playoffs. With the result, the Knights will end their season with an overall record of 3-5.
The Knights moved the ball into SMWC territory on their first drive before getting bogged down and being forced to punt. After the Pomeroys drove it down the field for a touchdown,
Vernon Duncan found
Morgan Capps for a 40-yard gain on the ensuing Knights possession to get Bellarmine into Pomeroy territory. The Knights' drive stalled however, and the Pomeroys returned the punt all the way to the Bellarmine 14 before an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty move the ball to the seven. SMWC scored two plays later to make it 14-0.
Duncan was intercepted on the third play of Bellarmine's next possession, but
Lance Weiter got it right back for the Knights with an interception of his own on the very next play. The Knights then engineered a drive that took eight minutes off the clock, highlighted by an 18-yard reception by Capps on third and five at the SMWC 37. The Knights could not cash in however, as Duncan was stuffed for a loss of two yards on fourth and one at the SMWC 10.
After the Knights defense forced a punt, the offense drove down the field once more, as passes of nine and 27 yards to
Ethan Barnett were followed by a 12 yard pickup from Duncan on the ground to get Bellarmine to the Pomeroys' 10 yard line.Â
Brenden Reid ran it in from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 1:05 remaining in the first half. SMWC drove it into Knights' territory on the ensuing possession, but an interception by
Da'coldus Fields with 28 seconds remaining kept the Pomeroys off the board. Bellarmine quickly drove to the SMWC 34, but was unable to put points on the board before halftime.
SMWC took the opening possession of the third quarter down the field and scored a touchdown to push their lead back up to 14. After a Knights three-and-out, the Pomeroys scored again to make it 28-7. The two teams then exchanged punts before a Duncan interception deep in Bellarmine territory led to another SMWC touchdown to make it 35-7 early in the fourth quarter. The Knights then went three-and-out again and the Pomeroys scored once more to put the game away. A 14-yard Duncan touchdown pass to Capps made the final score 41-14.
Duncan finished 22-of-38 for 258 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions. Duncan also led the Knights on the ground with 47 yards on 10 carries. Capps was Bellarmine's leading receiver on the afternoon with 109 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions. Barnett had 69 yards on five catches.
