LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite a 1-for-7 shooting performance in the first half,
Jack Karasinski finished Wednesday night's game against Chattanooga with 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, helping Bellarmine to a 79-64 win.
Karasinski's double-double was the first this season by a Knight and the first of the senior's career. It was the first double-double by a Knight against a Division I opponent since Langdon Hatton dropped 27 and 12 in a 96-95 overtime win at Kennesaw State on February 1, 2024.
Bellarmine (5-6) bounced back from a poor first-half shooting performance to sink 15 of 21 shots (.714) in the second half, including 4 of 7 (.571) from beyond the arc.
The Knights trailed 36-27 after a halftime buzzer-beating three by
Sam Donald closed the gap to single digits just before the break. It was a cold-shooting first stanza for the normally efficient Knights—just .313 and nearly identical percentages inside and outside of the arc. The Mocs were an even colder 6-for-25 (.240) from deep in the first half, but hit all seven of their shots inside the arc and four of their free throws.
The Knights started the second half on a 19-10 run to knot the score at 46-46 with 12:31 remaining. A Karasinski three tied it again at 51-51 with 10:20 remaining before Bellarmine finally broke through with a 53-51 lead after a pair of
Kenyon Goodin free throws.
Tied at 53-53 moments later, a Karasinski layup on the find from
Brian Waddell started a 13-0 Knights run, capped by a Goodin three to ignite the Knights Hall crowd with 4:19 remaining.
Chattanooga would not get within any closer than nine points of Bellarmine the rest of the way as the Knights coasted to their first home win over a Division I opponent this season.
The win for the Knights was the first in four tries against the Mocs, with the three most-recent games coming since the transition to Division I.
Brian Waddell scored 15 points, all in the second half after an 0-for-3 drought in the first half, and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. Goodin finished with 13, hitting three of his four shots, all from behind the arc, and all four of his freebies.
Michael Wilson Jr. also finished in double digits with 11 while
Darrius Bolden added career highs of six rebounds and seven assists.
Brennan Watkins and Jordan Frison each scored 20 points for the Mocs (5-7), shooting a combined 14-for-29 from the floor and 8-for-20 from three. Former Knight
Billy Smith endured a tough return to Knights Hall, finishing with six points on a 2-for-15 performance, including an 0-for-10 mark from beyond the arc.
As a team, the Mocs connected on just 10 of 46 threes (.217) despite shooting at a .360 clip prior to Wednesday.
Up next, Bellarmine heads to Lexington to face Kentucky inside Rupp Arena on Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET on SEC Network+.
