LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Eastern Kentucky controlled the interior in defeating the Bellarmine University women's basketball team 79-73 in Atlantic Sun Conference play Saturday in Knights Hall.
Eastern Kentucky (18-9, 8-6 ASUN) had a 50-16 advantage in points in the paint against Bellarmine (15-12, 6-8), which played on one day's rest in conference play while the Colonels played on two. EKU shot 48.3 percent from the floor and posted a 47-36 rebounding advantage.
Senior guard
Ashlee Harris paced four Knights in double figures with 16 points. Junior guard
Miyah Brown and senior forward
Skylar Treadwell both finished one rebound shy of double-doubles, with Brown registering 14 points and nine rebounds and Treadwell tallying 11 points and nine boards. Senior guard
Hope Sivori added 10 points.
Eastern Kentucky was on top 55-53 after three quarters. The Colonels took control after opening the fourth on a 12-2 run and extended their advantage to 14 with five minutes remaining.
Bellarmine didn't go quietly. Treadwell and senior guard
Hayley Harrison canned 3-pointers, Harris scored four straight points and Treadwell spotted Brown for a layup as the Knights rallied to within 77-73 with 28 seconds left after a 16-6 run.
EKU was able to seal the win after Kaitlyn Costner hit a pair of free throws, and Bellarmine following by missing a 3-pointer. Costner led five Colonels in double figures with 20 points.
Bellarmine drained 11 3-pointers, but the Knights accumulated just 14 two-point baskets.
Bellarmine, which wore pink jerseys in its Play4Kay game, will play at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Jacksonville.
