Women's basketball edged by Lipscomb in home finale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite an inspired second-half comeback in which the Bellarmine University women's basketball team erased a sizable deficit, Lipscomb managed to answer the run and then hold off the Knights for a 76-71 win Thursday night in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Senior forward Skylar Treadwell notched her third straight double-double and fourth in the last five games with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Bellarmine (17-13, 8-9 ASUN), which was playing in its regular-season home finale. Junior guard Erin Toller tallied 15 points, senior guard Ashlee Harris collected 13 and senior guard Hope Sivori chipped in 11.

Lipscomb (19-9, 12-5) is the ASUN's most prolific 3-point shooting team, but the Bisons did significant damage Thursday attacking Bellarmine off the dribble. Lipscomb amassed 42 points in the paint, which largely resulted from successful drives to the basket and led to 47.4-percent shooting from the field.

Molly Heard and Claira McGowan spearheaded Lipscomb's offense with 26 and 20 points, respectively. The Bisons led 20-10 after the first quarter and, after Bellarmine rallied to trail by only three at halftime, they built a 50-35 advantage midway through the third quarter.

Harris followed by converting a tough drive and diving on the floor to force a jump ball. That sequence stirred the Knights, who closed the quarter on a 16-6 run to get within five.

Bellarmine would extend the run to 24-6 at the outset of the fourth quarter, as Treadwell propelled the Knights into the lead on a traditional three-point play with eight minutes left.

Lipscomb responded by attacking the interior either through penetration or passing to exploit size advantages. Over the next three minutes, the Bisons were able to get re-established by making four layups, and then a free throw pushed their lead to 67-62 with 3:11 left.

Lipscomb created the cushion it needed down the stretch by expanding its run to 16-4 and the lead to 10 with 1:21 remaining.

Bellarmine honored Harris, Treadwell, Sivori, Hayley Harrison and Mia Beam on Senior Night.

The Knights, who handily clinched an ASUN Tournament berth, will conclude the regular season Saturday with a 3 p.m. (ET) contest at Austin Peay.
