LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
John Alie tied Bellarmine single-game program records with six goals and nine points Tuesday afternoon in the Knights' 19-6 win over Hampton at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
With the win, the Knights even their overall record at 5-5, 4-0 at home, while Hampton drops to 0-7. Bellarmine is now 4-0 all-time against Hampton with a combined score of 86-21.
"This was a good, solid effort on a quick turnaround," said Bellarmine head coach
Andrew Whitley. "We came out and controlled tempo from the outset and our offense settled into a groove."
For Alie, the six-goal effort was his second this season and the third of his career. He also added three assists to give him nine points to surpass his previous career high of eight against Cleveland State on February 18.
"
John Alie continues to have a potentially historic season and really did a great job today of taking advantage of opportunities in the flow of the offense," Whitley said of his junior attack.
Alie was just one of four multi-goal scorers for the Knights. Younger brother
Joe Alie scored four times and added two assists for six points to match his career high, also achieved against Cleveland State. Two additional freshmen attacks,
Mikey Usterbowski and
Leo Prosser, each registered their first career multi-goal games. For Usterbowski, they were the first scores of his career.
Though freshman
Ezra Moore did not find the back of the net after entering Tuesday averaging 1.56 goals per game, he did hand out three assists for the third straight game and the fourth time this season.
"The chemistry developing within our attack is really impressive and is hopefully a sign of very good things to come," said Whitley. "John, Joe and Ezra are doing a nice job of working together and developing some real patience as each possession evolves."
Though Bellarmine surrendered a pair of first-period goals, it was all smooth sailing against the Pirates after that. The Knights led 7-2 after the first, a quarter that included four scores by
John Alie, and blanked Hampton 6-0 in the second.
Whitley rested his starters, including
John Alie, for much of the second half. The Knights and Pirates played an even 3-3 third quarter and before Bellarmine outscored Hampton 3-1 in the fourth to wrap up the win.
Defensively, the six goals allowed were the second-fewest on the season. All three Knights goalies got work, collectively making 14 saves, led by
Nolan Hudnut's seven.
Jack Bryant added four saves and
Grant Crossley added three. The defense also caused a season-high 10 turnovers, led by
Jackson Campisano's three.
"The defense did a nice job today continuing to improve and develop chemistry," said Whitley. "We still need to be better scooping first time ground balls, and that will be a point of emphasis as we head into the weekend."
In addition to the defense's strong performance, the faceoff unit won 17 of 28 faceoffs, led by senior
Cole Messick's 8-for-9 effort.
The Knights are back at it Saturday in their third of three home games over an eight-day span. They will host St. Bonaventure at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN+. It will be Bellarmine's final nonconference game before beginning the six-game ASUN slate.
"I'm happy we're able to get a little momentum heading into Saturday," Whitley concluded. "St Bonaventure is playing good lacrosse and it will be a good test heading into conference play."
