RICHMOND, Ky. — Despite an infestation of errors, Eastern Kentucky managed to hold off the Bellarmine University baseball team for a series-clinching 8-7 win Sunday in Atlantic Sun Conference play at Earle Combs Stadium.
The most frustrating aspect of the loss for Bellarmine (4-15, 1-2 ASUN) almost certainly was that Eastern Kentucky (2-17, 2-1) left so many doors open for the Knights to take control of the contest. The Colonels piled up seven errors that led to five unearned runs for BU.
The last two of those unearned runs tied the game at 7 in the eighth. Junior
Brady Morse knotted it up with a sacrifice fly.
However, Eastern Kentucky took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom half, as Colby Ott delivered a go-ahead, two-out RBI single. The Colonels retired the side in order against Bellarmine in the ninth to secure their second straight one-run win in the series after the Knights captured the opener 10-0.
Before knotting the contest at 7, Bellarmine rallied to tie on two previous occasions. The Knights leveled the game at 2 in the second after an RBI single by junior
Charlie Rife.
Senior
Seth Sweet-Chick evened things up at 3 in the fifth when he launched a solo homer, his team-leading fifth of the season. EKU answered by building a 7-3 advantage before a slew of Colonel errors enabled the Knights to tie it back up.
Bellarmine will host Morehead State at 2 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
