Softball shutout in series opening doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team opened its second Atlantic Sun Conference series of the season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky, falling 13-0 and 11-0 on the day at Knights Field.

With the loss, the Knights move to 4-16 overall and 0-5 in the ASUN.

Game one was all Eastern Kentucky from the first inning. The Colonels put up two runs in the first to take the lead and never looked back, adding five runs in the third, threw in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 13-0 lead.

The Knights struggled at the plate in game one, tallying their first hit with one out in the top of the fifth, thanks to a single down the left field line by junior Madison Davis.

Two freshmen Knights made their collegiate debut in the affair in pitchers Natalie Kerr and Ally Richardson. Richardson also recorded her first career strikeout in her outing.

In the second game, EKU once again took an early lead, scoring a run in the first and three runs in the second to go up 4-0. After a scoreless third, the Colonels added on two more runs in the fourth before blowing the game open with five runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 11.

Despite a scoreless day, Bellarmine was much better at the plate in the second game, racking up eight hits. Senior Harlie Bickett and junior Jacklyn Zuege turned multi-hit efforts with two hits each to lead the team. Freshman Lydia Stowe, senior Chloe Collins, Davis and sophomore Morgan Williams all tallied one hit each. For Williams, the hit was not only her first of the season, but her first career collegiate hit.

Sophomore Selena Zuniga came in relief in the fifth and pitched two strong, scoreless innings while allowing just one hit before the Colonels exploded in the seventh.

Up next, Bellarmine will close out its homestand and series with Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, March 23.
